Ocean Flyers Face Storm In Dash To Berlin ——— (Continued from first page) ———— with Harold Bromley in an attempted Japan to America flight last September. They had been up more than 25 hours and were 1,200 miles at sea, when a broken exhaust ring forced them back. Gatty was in bed two months suffering from carbon monoxide gas poisoning. The Gatty-Post plane is a Lockheed Vega, driven by a Wasp engine of 425 rated horsepower and developing 590 with 1 to 10 supercharger. Its gasoline capacity in 540 gallons. New York, June 23—(AP)—Calculations made by Wiley Post and Harold Gatty, before their departure from New York for Harbor Grace, N.F., placed them at 8:30 o’clock tonight [Chicago daylight saving time], in latitude 53:12 north and 35:00 west, approximately half way between the outer-most lands of the American and European continents. U.S. Flyers Dash For Berlin [Map] Map shows great circle route, which Wiley Post and Harold Gatty are taking on their flight from the United Station to Berlin. The aviators hopped 1,200 from Roosevelt Field, N.Y., to Harbor Grace, Newfoundland, yesterday and took off over the Atlantic three hours and 40 minutes later. |
