April 23, 1931 Dear Wiley: you received I presume the wire from you--I will have to sneeze this guy's name (Skvirsky) advising that Russia declined your application to fly over that territory. Immediately upon receipt of this telegram which we opened and forwarded to you I called Patrick J. Hurley, Secretary of War and he advised me that there was only one man in the U.S. to get this permit and that was Senator Borah of Idaho. Leslie sent a wire to T.P. Gore, who is an old friend of his family's and he wired Mr. Borah. I enclose herewith copy of my wire to Borah and his answer. I believe we can work this out but in the meantime I wold [sic] suggest that you get Lockheed and anyong [sic] else of influence to sail telegrams in to Senator Borah. If you know of any influential fliers or influential air enthusiasts, be sure to have them wire Wm. E. Borah, Senate Building, Washington, D.C., asking that he secure permission for you. There is nothing else of importance except that I believe I will be able to get donations from a few of the people that I wrote while you were here and I may hear from some more of them. I will advise you fully. In the meantime I will be glad to hear from you advising me of the progress you are making there. With the kindest personal regards to yourself and Mrs. Post in which I am again joined by the coco-cola [sic] hounds, I am Yours, FCH:FD encls. |
