[Top] ‘Winnie Mae’ Herself Lands in L.B. [Below the heading] Picture of Mrs. Winnie Mae Fain and her son, "Chuck," aged 2, sailed into Long Beach yesterday from El Paso, just after word was received that her namesake, "Winnie Mae," had completed its streak across the skies of the world bearing Wiley Post and Harold Gatty to New York and fame. They were met by Leslie Fain, who is shown in the picture with his wife and son. The Fains will stay in Long Beach this summer, living at the Villa Riviera. F.C. Hall, Mrs. Fain’s father, who sponsored the Post-Gatty flight, said in New York last night that he will send the Winnie Mae to Long Beach at a present to his daughter. [Top] World Flight Sponsor Will Send Winnie Mae to L.B. As Present to His Daughter —————— New York, July 1 (U.P.)-- The girl for whom the Post and Gatty plane was named, Winnie Mae Fain, is in Long Beach, Calif. But F.C. Hall, her father, said at the field tonight that he intended to make Winnie Mae a present of the ship. "It’s my little girl’s plane," he said. "She’ll get it and nobody else. She is not a flier but she’s interested in aviation. We’ll take the plane out to Long Beach to her and she can do what she wants to with it." Mrs. Fain Flies Here From Okla. The woman for whom the Post- Gatty flight plane was named-- Mrs. Winnie Mae Fain--arrived yesterday at 5:30 p.m. at the Municipal airport after a fast air trip from Oklahoma City. She arrived shortly after the airport radio had conveyed the thrilling details of the landing of the two record-smashing fliers in New York. "Chuck" a Bit Weary With Mrs. Fain, daughter of F.C. Hall, backer of the globe-circling flight, was her 2-year-old son, "Chuck," who seemed none the worse for the trip and, aside from being a bit unsteady on his small legs, appeared to be perfectly composed and contented, even if a little bit tired. Mrs. Fain was greeted by her husband, Leslie Fain, who was among the radio listeners at the airport and conveyed the glad tidings to his wife when the trim white monoplane came to rest after a grateful landing. Other passengers in the ship, piloted by "Pop" Moore, were Mr. and Mrs. H. G. Frederickson of Oklahoma City. The group left Oklahoma City at 8:30 a.m. yesterday and spent the night at El Paso, making the dash from the Texas city to Long Beach in five hours. Mrs. Fain plans to remain here for the summer. She Is Delighted Mrs. Fain expressed delight at the Success of Post and Gatty in piloting the ship which bears her name around the world. ‘I know how tired they must be.’ She said, "for I’m tired myself and I flew only from El Paso today. I am going to wire ‘Dad’ and Mr. Post and Mr. Gatty congratulating them on their success." The Commonplace Approaches ————— An important phase of the globe girdling flight of Post and Gatty lies in the brevity of the time required for them to Circle the earth, compared with the longer Time required for the army fliers to go around the glove seven years ago. In this difference is graphic illustration of the vast improvement made in skill and knowledge and mechanical equipment in the years which have passed since the army fliers wrote their chapter of aerial history. The aviator of today is a vastly different aviator from the one who pierced the clouds in 1924. The ship that carried Post and Gatty around the polar circle is different from the aircraft aviators directed seven years ago. The aerial world is moving swiftly and it is moving forward toward better and safer things. The years ahead of us will bring additional improvement. Such feats as that of Post and Gatty are destined to become commonplace before the world is very much older. Ere long the world will pay no more attention to the feat cheered so insanely at Roosevelt field Wednesday than it will to a morning flight from New York to Philadelphia. The future of the human race is in the air. Tags: Chuck Fain Leslie Fain Wiley Post Winnie Mae Fain Photograph Winnie Mae |
