[Top] Fog Delays Winnie Mae In Takeoff On Tour Of Nation New York, July 8--(AP)--Wiley Post and Harold Gatty, held up most of the day by unfavorable weather, took off this afternoon in their world-girdling plane Winnie Mae to fly westward to receive the plaudits of their home towns. Driving to the Municipal Airport in Brooklyn this forenoon, the fliers received an unfavorable weather report, but showed little concern. "I can fly out of this fog in five minutes," Post predicted as he began inspection of the famous plane Winnie Mae, which has been on public exhibition. It was arranged for F.C. Hall, backer for the flight, to crowd into the Winnie Mae and for the wives to follow in another plane. An overnight stop was planned at Wichita, Kan., and the fliers expected to reach Chickasha, Okla., tomorrow afternoon. "The entire State of Oklahoma is going to turn out to welcome these boys," Hall said. "There’ll be a celebration there that will bear anything they got in New York or Washington." |
