[Top] Brings Racer Here [Picture of the Lockheed Vega monoplane.] The 440-horsepowered Lockheed Vega monoplane, pictured above, which won the National Air Race trophy for the best time from Los Angeles to Chicago will arrive in Mexia early Saturday for the air races and dedication program at Easterwood Legion Field here. The big ship, which is owned by F. C. Hall, uncle of Roy Combs of Mexia will be piloted by Wiley Post. Program For Legion Meet Saturday 9 a.m.-Planes leave Dallas for Mexia in "Free for All" Air Derby. More than 15 planes will compete for $600 in prizes. 9-10 a.m.-Arrival of visiting airplanes. 10 am.- Dedication of the Easterwood American Legion Airport. Invocation by Rev. F.H. Hudson. Formal presentation by Brig. Gen. W.E. Jackson, Hillsboro. Acceptance for community by O.F. Watkins. Acceptance for state by Col. W.E. "Bill" Easterwood, Dallas. 12-2 p.m.-Arrival of planes. Demonstration at field. 2 p.m.- Stunt flying contest. $50 prize for best stunt. 3 p.m.-The Mysterious Flyer 4 p.m.- Parachute Jump to circle. $25 for winner. Passengers to be carried at flying field throughout day. 7 p.m.- Carnival open on the streets of Mexia. 7:30 p.m.- Opening of Sixth district convention of American Legion. Meeting in Welch Motor company building. Post Commander W.A. Reiter presiding. Invocation by State Champlain R.G. Hill, Groesbeck. Welcome in behalf of city by Ben S. Smith. Welcome in behalf of Nowlin Post by Owen F. Watkins. Address by State Commander Hal Brennan, Laredo, Texas. Solo by Mrs. E.T. Butler. 9 p.m.- Dance at Welch Motor company building. Aggieland orchestra. Sunday (?)m.-Flight by ships in formation over city and vicinity. (?):30-All field operations will cease for church services. 12 noon-Free luncheon for Legionnaires at Liontarion Inn. 1:30 p.m.-25 mile triangular course race over Easterwood Airport. $200 prizes. 3 p.m.- Flight by "Ae, onica", smallest airplane in America. 3:30 p.m.- Spot landing contest. One trial only, $75 in prizes. 4 p.m.- Pony Express $75 in prizes. 5 p.m. Mysterious Flyer, prize $25. Lady Stunt Flyer, $25 prize. Parachute Jump, $25 prize. |
