[Top] Plane Carrying Wives Of Fliers Is Damaged Landing at Columbus ———————— Mrs. Post and Mrs. Gatty Are Not Injured; Companion Ship to Winnie Mae Ground Loops, Breaking Wing and Landing Gear; Trip to Oklahoma Is Delayed. ———————— (Details of Oklahoma City reception, page 18) COLUMBUS, Ohio, July 8.--(AP)--Flying Westward in the Winnie Mae, the plane in which they completed a record-breaking ound the world flight last Wednesday, Harold Gatty and Wiley Post were delayed here Wednesday night when another ship bearing their wives cracked up as it landed at Port Columbus shortly before 6 o’clock. Mrs. Post, Mrs. Gatty, and Pilot Marshall Headle of Los Angeles narrowly escaped innjury when their plane, a sister ship of the Winnie Mae, ground looped breaking the landing gear and the tip of the left wing. Headle, chief test pilot of the Lock-heed Vega Corp., expressed the belief he damaged a wheel in taking off from Municipal airport, New York, Wednesday afternoon, and that it gave way on the runway here. Air-port officials said the plane was flying cross wind before it landed. Post and Gatty, accompanied by F.C. Hall, Financial backer of the world flight, brought the Winnie Mae to earth three minutes before the arrival of their wives and were standing near the runway at the time of the accident. The party had planned only a brief stop here for refueling before flying to St. Louis to spend the night. After inspecting the damaged plane, however, Post and Gatty announced they will remain until morning. The plane will be repaired and it was hoped to have it ready for a takeoff at dawn. ——————— Post Starts West Minus Gatty And F.C. Hall New York, July 8--(AP)--WIley Post started westward to receive the plaudits of his home folks Wednesday almost without his navigator, Harold Gatty, and his financial backer, F.C. Hall. Irked by five hours delay due to un-favorable weather, the world girdling pilot shot his plane into the air as soon as the skies cleared, mistakenly believing that Gatty and Hall were in the rear cabin.
