Weather Halts Non-Stop Hop Of City Plane ——— Wiley Post Grooms Hall’s Ship for Dash From Pacific Coast to Chicago. ——— By Wiley Post Pilot of F.C. Hall’s entry in the Los Angeles-Chicago Air Derby BURBANK, Calif., Aug. 25—(Spe- cial.)—The five entrants in the Los Angeles-Chicago air derby Monday were waiting the "good weather" sign for their takeoff in their speed dash across the country. [Right side: Picture of Wiley Post.] The pilots, Wil- liam S. Brock, Lee F. Shoenhair, Roscoe Turner, Art Goebel and myself, each are ready for the flight and are marking time un- til the weather reports indicate it is safe for us to takeoff. F.C. Hall’s Lockheed-Vega is in good shape. Sev- eral tests have been run and I fell [sic] the motor never was in better working order. A representative of the Prat- Whitney Co. has been giving the en- gine a final check. As I told you, Friday and Saturday I ran a bunch of tests including fuel consumption at altitudes from 5,000 feet, 10,000 feet, and 15,000 feet at full throttle. May Start Wednesday In all probability, some of the fliers will leave Los Angeles Metro- politan airport Wednesday for Chi- cago. Weather reports here Monday indicate flying will be very good by then. I have arranged for weather reports for entire route. When I start down the runway, Hall’s plane will be loaded with 508 gallons of gasoline. This much will be needed because the trip is a non- stop flight. I feel sure that I will be able to takeoff with this load. Starting Time Indefinite Haven’t decided what hour of the day I will leave. I imagine it will be just at the break of day. Have never been strong for night flying and es- pecially with the load I will be carry- ing. We probably will know by late Mon- day when we will hop from here. Weather officials are watching the at- mospheric changes and are reporting them to us. The weather, you know, plays a great part in any race and all of us are anxiously awaiting a good breeze. And when it does come along, we might all take off at the same time. Have received many telegrams from Oklahoma City and will do my best to push the Oklahoma City plane across the old finish line first. |
