[Top] 15 Planes In Single Race To New Field Legion Men Coming From Everywhere To Mexia Big Parade Two-Gala Days Are Ahead for Mexia Visitors More than 15 airplanes will make their get-away from Love Field in Dallas at 9 o’clock Saturday morning to race for Mexia in the "Free for All" air derby which opens the two-day celebration here for the District No. 6 American Legion convention and the celebration and dedication of the Easterwood American Legion airport. While local Legionnaires were hurriedly completing their plans for the greatest convention ever held in Mexia, John F. Kirk, Mexia pilot, made a quick air trip to Dallas Friday to enlarge the list of entries for the Air Derby. More than 11 planes will be in the race With a possibility of at least 20 battling for the prizes. Easterwood Coming Col. W.E. "Bill" Easterwood will be in Mexia early Saturday while many American Legion officials will arrive during the day to take part in the program. More than 35 airplanes of every conceivable design are expected at the airport. Sunshine and a forecast of warmer for Saturday brought promise of one of the greatest crowds ever assembled in Mexia. Thousands of visitors from all over Central Texas are expected to arrive during Saturday. Col. Easterwood, Brig. General W.E. Jackson of Hillsboro and Owen F. Watkins, Mexia attorney will each speak at the dedication ceremonies for the Easterwood American Legion all port at the flying field at o’clock Saturday morning. Open to All The gates are to be thrown open to the public throughout Saturday morning, and the crowds were expected to flock to the field to hear the distinguished visitors speak. The arrival of the Air Derby entries as well as all other visiting planes will entertain the throngs at the flying field throughout the morning. Many stunts are on the program and the Legion convention going on in the city, Saturday is expected to keep the officials and the visitors going throughout the busy day. A carnival will be open on the streets of Mexia Saturday night A dance is the feature of the evening’s entertainment with the Texas A&M Aggieland orchestra providing the music for the hundreds of dancers who will flock to the Welch motor company Saturday evening. Groesbeck, Corsicana and many other cities over Central Texas will have visiting delegations of Leginnaides here for the convention prominent officials of the organization will take part in the two day program. The drum and bugle corps of the Corsicana Legion post will be here. All Mexia merchants are asked to put out their flags before their stores early Saturday. The city is being cleaned up and decorated for the celebration and everyone is invited to assist the Nowlin Legion post in entertaining the thousands of visitors who are expected. Houston, -Oct. 24-(UP)- With an elaborate program scheduled for a full week, Houston today awaited the arrival of the U.S. Cruiser Houston, which is scheduled to reach port here tomorrow. It will be the first visit of the vessel to its name sake city. |
