Friedrich "Fritz" Werner was a prominent twentieth-century portrait and still life artist. Born in Vienna, Austria, in 1898, he studied art privately with Hans Tichy in Vienna and went on to attend the National Academy of Arts in Munich, the Vienna Imperial Academy, and the Academy des Beaux Arts in Paris. Upon completing his education, Werner relocated to Argentina where he lived until moving to Los Angeles, California, in 1932. After meeting E. W. Edwards, an art collector and hotel owner, Werner would spend the next 38 consecutive winters staying in Edwards’ San Marcos hotel in Chandler, Arizona. It was here that he attended the hotel’s many themed parties and often painted portraits for its esteemed guests. Werner frequently traveled for work, but split the majority of his latter years living in Arizona and New York. He eventually settled down in La Jolla, California, where he died on April 1, 1994. Werner painted a total of six portraits in the Oklahoma Hall of Fame collection, all rendered in a soft, colorful style. His portrait of Edna Hoffman Bowman was unveiled at the Oklahoma Heritage House, the former home of the Oklahoma Hall of Fame, in 1972. |
